Become a Medical
Transcriptionist
Our Medical Transcription Certificate Program will prepare you to enter
the world of medical transcription. A medical Transcriptionist transfers
a doctor’s notes on dictation into a written medical record. We will
first assess your reading, language, typing, and computer skills and
recommend appropriate courses to prepare you for your career in transcription.
What does it take to become a transcriptionist?
• All candidates should have a high school diploma or equivalent.
If you have had previous clerical experience, you should be able to:
• Type 35 words per minute • Use a word processing program
• Use a computer
• Hear audio tapes well
• Use good English and grammar structures
If you have little or no clerical experience, or need to brush up your
skills, the following classes are offered through our Adult Education
program:
Keyboarding, Computer Basics, Microsoft Office and English grammar.
Requirements for Transcription Certificate:
Medical Terminology (Levels I and II combined)
Medical Transcription (Levels I and II combined)
Typing Test
3-6 hours Job shadowing

This session is recommended for all students considering taking classes
towards our Medical Transcription Certificate. The course instructor
will discuss all course prerequisites, materials needed and costs, classes
needed and all requirements for a certificate of completion. Please

Medical
Terminology
Medical Terminology is a complex language describing the human body,
disease processes, diagnosis, medical conditions, and treatments. Students
will explore medical terms and techniques in an easy to understand format.
Information will be presented on the human body, terminology, laboratory
tests, medical procedures, and how medical terms are utilized as part
of patient care. Even students who have taken medical terminology in
the past will benefit from this course. Students may take this course
for college credit from SMCC. This course is a prerequisite for training
as a medical assistant, nurse and other medical professions. See below for required text.

Instructor: K. C. Morrell, a health care professional for 34 years,
is the Transcription Manager in the Health Information Management Services
Department at SMMC. She has taught Medical Terminology at SMCC, CMCC,
and Andover College as well as SMMC.

Medical Transcription
This course provides students with the skills necessary to begin a career
in medical office transcription. Topics include; patient confidentiality,
foot pedal usage, transcribing techniques, anatomy and physiology, reference
book usage, shortcuts, proofreading, medical word lists, speed building,
and understanding dictation instructions. The course fee includes cost
of CDs.
Course prerequisites:
• Prior medical terminology course work (see Medical Terminology and
those listed above.)
Course Requirements:
• 3 hours of transcribing outside of class time
• 3-6 hours of job shadowing in a medical office
• Transcription students should have access to a computer and able to
use our Vpedal or substitute a Dictaphone.
Foot pedal: $75 - available from Adult Ed Office/please request when
registering.
